(SHELBYVILLE, Ky.) -- One high school student was hurt and another arrested after a fight at a high school Wednesday morning escalated into a stabbing, officials said.
The injured Shelby County High School student, a 16-year-old sophomore, was stabbed twice in the back and was taken to University of Louisville Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Shelby County Sheriff Mike Armstrong said. He was listed in stable condition, said Duanne Puckett, a spokeswoman for the Shelby County school system.
A second student, a 14-year-old freshman, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and possession of an unlawful weapon on campus, Armstrong said. He was arrested by a school resource officer, Puckett said.
The stabbing happened in a lobby area at the high school near the gymnasium at 8:22 a.m. EST, Armstrong said. The two students were fighting when one pulled out the knife and stabbed the other, Armstrong said. No other students were involved or injured.
Armstrong declined to release the names of the students involved because they are juveniles.
